How to Secure a Dhaka Flat for Under 7,000 Taka — Without Drilling Anything

Most home security advice assumes you own the building. If you rent a flat in Dhaka, you do not, and that rules out almost everything: no wiring through walls, no drilling that you will argue about when you move out, no contract with a monitoring company.

The good news is that the wireless kit that got cheap in the last five years does not need any of it. A working alarm on a rented flat is an afternoon’s work, and the whole thing runs on adhesive pads and batteries.

Here is what the parts actually do, and the order to buy them in.

Start with the panel, because everything talks to it

The WOFEA WG15 is the hub. Sensors do not make noise or send messages on their own — they tell the panel, and the panel decides what happens.

What matters in a Dhaka flat specifically:

It calls and texts, not just pushes. Push notifications assume your data is on and working. The WG15 auto-dials preset numbers and sends SMS as well. If you are at work in Motijheel and your phone is on a weak signal, an SMS still lands.

It survives load-shedding. A 12V rechargeable backup runs the panel for five to eight hours without mains. An alarm that dies with the power is not an alarm in this city — it is a doorbell that a burglar can switch off at the meter.

It scales past what you will ever need. 99 wireless zones and 7 wired. You will use four. The point is that adding a sensor later never means replacing the panel.

It has an SOS button. One press sends the alert to your preset contacts. That is worth more to a lot of households than the burglar function.

Then cover the door you actually use

The PST-DS100B door and window sensor is two small pieces — one on the door, one on the frame. Separate them and the panel knows. It is 65 × 24 × 14mm and 50 grams, which is small enough that a guest will not notice it and light enough that adhesive holds it.

It runs on 433MHz with a telescopic antenna, rated to 100–200 metres in open air. Inside a concrete flat you will get far less than 200 metres — concrete and rebar eat radio — but you do not need 200 metres. You need the distance from your front door to wherever the panel sits, through one or two internal walls. That works.

Buy one for the main door first. Not the balcony, not the windows — the door, because that is the entry point that gets used in the overwhelming majority of actual break-ins, and because a sensor on the door you use every day is the one that teaches you whether the system is reliable.

Add motion where a door sensor cannot help

A door sensor only knows about the door. The PST-IR200B motion sensor covers a space: up to 12 metres, across a 110° arc.

Put it where an intruder has to walk regardless of how they got in — the corridor between the front door and the bedrooms, usually. One well-placed motion sensor covers what four door sensors would.

Two practical notes nobody mentions:

• PIR sensors detect heat moving across the field, not toward it. Mount it so people cross the beam rather than walk straight at it. Corner-mounted at the end of a hallway, aimed along the hallway, is the classic mistake.
• Do not point it at a window that gets afternoon sun, or at a spot where a ceiling fan moves warm air. Both cause false alarms, and an alarm you stop trusting is worse than no alarm.

It runs on a standard 6F22 9V battery and has an LED that tells you when the battery is low, which means you find out from the sensor rather than from a break-in.

What it costs

The order that actually makes sense

If you can only buy one thing: the panel. On its own it is still an SOS button, a siren and a way to get an SMS to a family member.

If you can buy two: panel and door sensor. That is a real alarm.

If you can buy three: add motion. That is the point where the system covers the case where someone comes through a window.

Later: more door sensors, one room at a time. The panel already has room.

Two honest limits

This is a deterrent and an alert, not a guard. It makes noise, it tells you, and it tells whoever you nominate. It does not stop anybody. That is true of every consumer alarm at any price.

Sensors run on batteries, and batteries end. Put a reminder in your phone for every six months and check them. A dead sensor reports nothing, and it fails silently — which is exactly the failure mode you would not notice.
